Tanks, Muirhead Bone, 1916 Muirhead Bone was Britain’s first official war artist. He was sent to record British efforts on the Somme. His drawings proved hugely popular, as they had greater authenticity than the efforts of artists whose pictures appeared in the illustrated press, but who had never been to the front. This picture of a British tank made a particular impact. This new weapon was first used on 15 September, when forty-nine of them took part in a major attack around the villages of Flers and Courcelette. Early tanks lacked the range and reliability to be truly war-winning weapons, but they caused a sensation both at the front and among civilians at home.
